Field note
Reading mute rates without turning the room against itself
A mute is often a polite door closing. In Kuching sittings, hosts mention mutes in passing: “my aunt silenced us after the 9 p.m. recipe.” The export may only show a notification that was “delivered.”
We treat clustered mutes after a named ping as weather around that ping. We do not ask hosts to guilt people back. Moving the recipe note to lunch, or dropping it, has restored evening threads more than any “re-engagement” copy we have been shown.
If your log cannot name the ping, we cannot name the weather. Keep the paper tally for three nights before you ask us to guess.
